Frequently Asked Questions

How can I grow magic truffles/sclerotia?

All you need is a spore syringe from a truffle producing mushroom species like the Psilocybe tampanensis, a Mushbag Rice and some patience. We also offer Ready-To-Grow sclerotia kits.

Do all mushroom species produce magic truffles?

No. Only the Psilocybe mexicana, Psilocybe galindoi, Psilocybe tampanensis and Psilocybe atlantis produce magic truffles.

What is the life cycle of mushrooms?

The life cycle of the mushroom is best understood when compared to that of a plant. The spores are the seeds, the underground mycelium is the plant, and the mushrooms are the fruits. The (white) mycelium reproduces by forming mushrooms. When the mushrooms are mature, they release their spores. These will later germinate and grow into mycelium again, thus completing the circle of life.

What is a spore syringe?

A spore syringe is a suspension of sterile water and mushroom spores. By injecting this mixture in a substrate like the Mushbag Rye, the spores will develop into mycelium, using the nutrients present in the rye. Exposing the mycelium to fresh air and light will then trigger mushroom formation.

Why don’t I see any spores in my syringe?

Spores are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye. They can only be seen with the naked eye when they are clustered together.

How should I store my spore syringes?

Spore syringes should be stored in their clean ziplock bag and placed in a refrigerator. Stored in the fridge they will remain usable for several months.

How should I store my grow kit?

Ready-To-Grow kits should be used immediately. Grow kits containing a spore syringe and substrate like the Mushroom Grow Kit Easy can be kept for several months, provided that the spore syringe is kept in the fridge. Never store a grow kit above a radiator or in the full sun.

I am new to mushroom growing, what can you advice?

The Mushroom Grow Kit Ready-To-Grow and the Mushroom Grow Kit Easy are the easiest to use. Once set-up, all you have to do is water the kit once and place it in the grow bag. The Mushroom Grow Kit Basic requires the most care and attention, but will teach you all the basics of mushroom home cultivation.

I accidentally discarded the lid of my grow box, what should I do?

You can also cover the grow box with some aluminium foil.

The mycelium has stopped growing, what can I do?

Sometimes, after a few weeks of colonization, the mycelium stops growing. When using a Mushbag, gently break up the mycelium and shake the bag. The mycelium will then continue to grow.

How do I recognize a contamination?

Contaminations of mould or bacteria come in various forms and appearances. If the substrate shows any other colour than white, it is probably contaminated and cannot be saved. However, there’s often some light brown colouring due to the colour of the grains. Also, mushrooms become blue when they are bruised. A good test is by smell. If the substrate doesn’t smell good (that is, not mushy) you probably have a contamination.
